Astrological Context, Week of December 6

(All times Eastern)

The Mars-Pluto sextile is exact early on Monday morning, making the first part of the week a good one for finishing up projects and cleaning up loose ends. On Tuesday morning, Mercury squares Neptune, making the first part of the week a challenging time for clear thinking. There may be a good deal of confusion, especially in communications, and overstimulation in general. Trading markets may show weirdness and instability or insecurity.

Mars also squares Jupiter, on Wednesday morning, bringing a midweek of uncertain energy levels. On the one hand, we may be optimistic about pushing ahead and achieving our goals; on the other, we may lack motivation overall. It’s good to focus on non-brainy, non-technical goals now (since Mercury is also squaring Neptune), but if you feel unfocused or unmotivated, that’s OK. The Sun will also square Neptune on the 12th, continuing the lack of overall clarity in our direction. Clear judgment may be hard now and efforts may not seem to bear much fruit. But it’s also a good time for art, music, poetry, and most aesthetic endeavors. Just be careful not to ignore responsibilities if the feeling of escapism is strong.

Early on the 13th, Mars leaves its home base of Scorpio and enters Sagittarius where he’ll stay for about 6 weeks. Here he can be a bit off the hook, since there is nothing bounding him in, and the pioneering, exploring energy may feel great, but may also get you into some trouble if you don’t respect boundaries.

But the big story of the week/month is Venus’s conjunction with Pluto at the end of Capricorn. Relationships affected directly by this are likely to undergo some big changes, with some testing and confirming or destroying of current boundaries. We may experience some highly intense sexual feelings now, and there may also be issues of power, hierarchy, and jealousy at play. If your relationship is stable, this can be a wonderfully intense time of merging your needs; if it’s unstable, it is likely to be far more of a major challenge. Early on the 16th, Venus turns retrograde, still conjunct Pluto. While the Venus-Pluto conjunction happens every year, because it’s tied into the Venus retrograde cycle, it’s an extended event this time. So this transit is the beginning of a process that will last until early March, since Venus will turn direct at some point and in March cross Pluto for the last time this year.
