Astrological Context, Week of January 16, 2023

(All times Eastern)

Remember that these aspects (aside from entry into new signs) will be in effect a few days before and a few days after the exact dates listed here. So keep this in mind when reading the daily updates this week.

This week has a few notable planetary transits, aside from the Moon. On Wednesday morning, Mercury turns direct in apparent motion, beginning their way back again through Capricorn and slowly allowing forward motion in areas of communications, details, studies, etc. This leaves Uranus as the only retrograde planet, and that will change just a few days later.

The Sun also conjoins Pluto on Wednesday, making the midweek a powerful time in which issues of control, authority, and abuse take center stage, especially in the professional realm and in US politics.

On Friday at 3:29am the Sun enters Aquarius, marking the most wintery time of the year in the northern hemisphere. The Sun is opposite his own sign of Leo here, and is considered debilitated because of that. The focus now is on community and overall structure, rather than personal honor or glory. Perhaps we need each other most at this coldest time of the year.

On Sunday, Venus conjoins Saturn, which emphasizes the social, communal aspects that the Sun in Aquarius ushers in during the mid-week. Now is a time for loyalty, duty, and increased relationship commitment. Conversely, a serious re-evaluation of close relationships may bring us to major shifts and endings rather than a deepening. Much depends on how these aspects fall in your own chart as well as the current condition of your relationships.
