Astrological Context, Week of July 17, 2023

(All times Eastern)

Remember that these aspects (aside from entry into new signs) will be in effect a few days before and a few days after the exact dates listed here. So keep this in mind when reading the daily updates this week.

This week has a good deal of action among the planets. On Monday Mercury squares Jupiter. This can bring some ambivalence to our thoughts and choices. We may also have an overinflated sense of ourselves or what we are capable of, so take care. There is also a strong temptation to look before leaping.

On Thursday, the Sun trines Neptune in water signs. This is generally a gentle time of aesthetic pursuits and dreaming, especially in regard to our profession or overall life goals, as opposed to normal, daily concerns. But Mars opposes Saturn on the same day, and if it connects with your own chart, or the charts of those around you, this tense combination is likely to overshadow the former. This aspect is often experienced as the inability to move forward easily or smoothly. There is energetic motion forward at the same time as a major block. It may take the form of circumstances or even of other people standing in your way. It’s likely to affect those with plants and points in early Virgo/Pisces more than others.

On Friday, the Sun follows with its own opposition, this one to Pluto, to keep the tension running high. Competition is strong now, and drives for power as well. There may be a crisis or two that is difficult to resolve. This is happening in the last few degrees of Cancer/Capricorn, so if you have sensitive points there, be ready. We are also likely to see this one play out in the news.

On Saturday, Venus turns retrograde for her usual 40-day cycle. This time she’s in Leo, so look at that part of your own chart for some action. Her retrograde is likely to bring people and situations from the past to the front and center again. This cycle repeats in the same sign every 8 years, so if you can remember what was going on for you in the summer of 2015 in your relationships (of all sorts) and social life, it may give you some insight into what’s ahead. This is another cycle that tends to play out on the world scene, so look for related new stories in the next couple of months.

The Sun also enters Leo on Saturday, bringing the height of the season. The hottest days are upon us soon, which may be welcome to some, but not so much to others, as the planet heats up overall. But it’s also a busy time of year for seeing and being seen and showing off and getting together for parties – all Leo type activities.

Finally, on Sunday Mercury squares Uranus, which can bring a real short-circuiting of our mental processes and communications. We need to be careful not to get stuck in rigid ways of thinking and not to dig in our heels too deeply now, or we’re likely to suffer for it.
